How Swiss addresses are structured
In Switzerland you live in one municipality, inside one canton, inside the country — and your postal code is a separate Swiss Post routing number.
| Level | What it is | Count (CH) |
|---|---|---|
| Postal code | Swiss Post's routing number (1000–9999). | ~4,000 |
| Locality | The postal town; it may span municipalities. | ~4,000 |
| Municipality | The political unit you're a resident of. | 2'123 |
| Canton | One of the member states you live in. | 26 |
| Country | The country — Switzerland (CH). | 1 |
A postal code is not a municipality
A postal code is a Swiss Post routing number, not a political border, so it need not line up with a single municipality.

FAQ
- How do I find out which municipality I live in?
- Use the location button on this page — it detects your municipality (Gemeinde) from your device and links straight to it. Remember a postal code alone does not tell you the municipality.
- What is my postal code?
- Press "Use my location" and this page shows the postal code (PLZ) for where you are, plus the locality, municipality and canton.
- Which canton am I in?
- The location button shows your canton alongside your municipality and postal code, each linking to its full page.
- Can one postal code belong to several municipalities?
- Yes. A postal code is a Swiss Post routing number, so it can span more than one municipality — and a municipality can have several postal codes.
- Does my location leave my device?
- No. The lookup runs entirely in your browser; your coordinates are never sent to a server, stored, or tracked.
- How accurate is the location?
- On mobile it is usually precise; on a desktop over Wi-Fi it can be off by a few kilometres, which may span several postal codes. When that happens we mark the result as approximate and show the alternatives.
